How to Build a High Performing Team

In today’s competitive business landscape, the success of any organisation hinges not only on individual talent but also on the collective synergy of its teams. High-performing teams are the cornerstone of innovation, productivity, and organisational growth. They leverage diverse skill sets, foster collaboration, and support in driving excellent results for the company. However, building such teams requires intentional effort, strategic planning, and effective leadership. In this article from the CJ. Talent team, we delve into the essential strategies on how to build a high-performing team.

Clarify goals and expectations

As a leader, you must articulate your team’s objectives, key results, and performance metrics transparently. By ensuring alignment between individual roles and overarching goals, team members can gain clarity on their responsibilities and the collective vision they are working towards. In addition, establishing realistic expectations helps to create a sense of accountability and empowers team members to take ownership of their tasks.

Foster open communication

Encourage an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback openly. Always aim to promote constructive dialogue and diverse perspectives by being genuinely open to suggestions and encouraging team members to share their views. Whether through regular meetings, brainstorming sessions, or digital collaboration platforms such as Slack or Teams, prioritise channels that support information sharing across the team and ensure you, as team leader, are an active participant to model the behaviour you want to encourage.

Cultivate trust

Trust forms the foundation of a high-performing team. Build trust by demonstrating reliability, fairness and consistency in your actions as a leader. Encourage mutual respect and foster a culture where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning and growth rather than blame or judgement. Psychological safety, as coined by Google’s Project Aristotle, refers to the belief that team members can take risks, express themselves authentically, and voice their opinions without fear of reprisal.

Ask your team regularly for their input and feedback on your own personal contributions, and really listen to what they tell you, then act on it whenever possible. Teams that believe their opinions will be listened to and taken on board at every level are more likely to build strong levels of trust.

Promote diversity and inclusion

Embrace diversity in all its forms – be it cultural backgrounds, perspectives, or skill sets. Diverse teams are better equipped to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation, whilst inclusivity values each team member’s unique strengths and contributions.

Encourage collaboration and teamwork

Collaboration is the cornerstone of high-performing teams. Encourage a culture of teamwork where individuals leverage their skills and expertise to achieve shared goals. Establish clear channels for collaboration, whether through project management tools, collaborative workspaces, or team-building activities. Collaboration and teamwork do not necessarily require team members to carry out tasks and activities in pairs or groups, and in fact not everyone works best in that way. Instead collaboration may look like regular meetings where the team gather to update on their progress against objectives, help each other with blockages and challenges, and plan the next steps collaboratively.

Provide resources and support

Equip your team with the resources, tools, and support they need to thrive. Invest in professional development opportunities, training programmes, and mentorship initiatives that support team members to enhance their skills and expand their capabilities. Provide access to the right technology for their needs and support in streamlining workflows that enable seamless collaboration. As a leader, prioritise removing obstacles and providing the necessary support to enable your team to achieve their full potential.

Recruit effectively

When it comes to building a high-performing team, you can put all these measures in place, but if your talent isn’t the right cultural fit, then you’ll have a mountain to climb to achieve success. Recruiting the right talent for your business is integral to business growth. We therefore recommend reading our article on ‘how to manage the recruitment experience effectively’ – helping to ensure that you’re bringing in the candidates that your business deserves.

Lead by example

Lead by example and embody the values, principles, and behaviours you wish to instil within your team. Serve as a mentor and coach, providing guidance, support, and encouragement to help your team members realise their full potential.

Building a high-performing team is an ongoing journey that requires continual improvement, dedication and constantly providing the right tools and resources to support your team. If you provide the right conditions to support your team, there are endless opportunities to drive sustained business growth.
